The book, "The Diary of George Cooke: Twenty-three Years On a Maryland Plantation, 1826-1849", bespeaks the importance of this turnpike on the daily lives of the area plantation owners.

Innkeepers Susan and David Balderson have owned the Wayside Inn since October 1998. They opened the Inn full-time in October, 1999. Prior to purchasing the Inn, Susan and David had lived in Ellicott City since 1987. Susan is a CPA who works for the U.S. Justice Dept. in the Bankruptcy Department. David, after a wonderful career working for McCormick & Company (yes, the spice co.) in entrepreneurial businesses, embarked on what he calls the great corporate dream: owning and operating a Bed and Breakfast. The Inn has grown from a dream to a wonderful reality, winning accolades from almost every major newspaper and magazine from Washington, D.C. to Baltimore. It has been awarded both Select Registry and Diamond Collection status, two of the industry's highest honors.
