Nestled in the bustling city of Los Angeles, The Tree Yoga Cooperative offers a serene sanctuary for individuals seeking solace and self-discovery through the art of yoga. This worker-owned cooperative, run by a remarkable team of Women, Veterans, Black and Immigrant entrepreneurs, has become a safe haven for people of color, providing a nurturing space for wellness practices, teaching, and the exchange of services.
At The Tree Yoga Cooperative, mindfulness meditation takes center stage, with classes available for free or on a sliding scale. The cooperative also extends its reach beyond its studio walls, offering guided mindfulness presentations and sessions to community partnerships. It's truly a place where mindfulness is not just a practice, but a way of life.
What sets The Tree Yoga Cooperative apart is its unwavering commitment to sustainability and accessibility. Recognizing the impact of their services on the environment and society, the cooperative ensures that its ethics and economic decisions prioritize the well-being of its students, customers, and workers. Through their accessible monthly on-demand subscription, they support BIPOC practitioners and offer sliding scale pricing, allowing students to pay what they can while fairly compensating their BIPOC teachers.
With a keen focus on social justice, The Tree Yoga Cooperative stands as a beacon of hope and inclusion. Their community support extends to frontline justice warriors, educators, mental health providers, formerly incarcerated individuals, the homeless, and those struggling with addiction, domestic violence, foster care, and beyond. Every day, the cooperative works tirelessly to address the health inequities plaguing BIPOC communities, taking a holistic and systems-change approach.
The Tree Yoga Cooperative was born out of the collective vision and passion of four extraordinary individuals: Jana Johnson, Rita Ortiz, Jennifer Alvarez, and Jonié Cole Thomas II. Each brings a unique set of skills and experiences to the cooperative, contributing to its dynamic and inclusive environment. Jana Johnson, a 500-RYT with Yoga Alliance, leads the way with her extensive training and expertise. Rita Ortiz, a military veteran and 30-year resident of south Los Angeles, found her Zen through the practice of yoga. Jennifer Alvarez, a health equity advocate with a Master of Public Health, adds her knowledge in community organizing and program development to the cooperative. And Jonié Cole Thomas II, an author, philosopher, historian, and computer engineer, brings his research and self-responsibility teachings to the mat.
The Tree Yoga Cooperative has garnered praise and adoration from its students and members of the community. One reviewer eloquently shares, "This studio is amazing. I started practicing yoga here in September with absolutely no background or experience. The classes and instructors have made me feel welcomed and supported throughout my journey." Another reviewer highlights the beauty of the space, the down-to-earth nature of the staff, and the sense of community that permeates through every aspect of the cooperative.
