This Smoky Mountains country inn was founded in 1982 by innkeeper and owner Deener Matthews, who also manages the day-to-day operations of the inn during the in-season from late April through early November.

Constructed in 1971 as a family home by Deener and her husband, Dan, an Episcopal clergyman, The Swag boasts a rich history that dates back to the 18th century. The inn features log buildings that were reassembled on high meadowland cleared for farming at the turn of the 20th century. The largest building in the inn, the Lonesome Valley Primitive Baptist Church from Tennessee, serves as the main living room in the Swag House. The logs used to construct the buildings were hand-hewn from huge tulip poplar trees, which are rare today. The two and a half-mile private drive leading to the inn climbs over 1,000 feet to offer breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.
