Known as the Ninigret Lodge, the summer mansion was sold to Cornelius Sullivan in 1929. Sullivan, a Wall Street lawyer, and his wife, Mary Quinn Sullivan, an artist and art teacher in the New York City public schools, were both children of Irish immigrants. Together, they amassed a collection of modern art that included paintings, sculpture, and manuscripts by now-famous artists such as Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso, Cezanne, and Yeats. Mary Sullivan was one of the three founders of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The Sullivan House was lovingly restored in 1993 by Ellen Ball O'Brien, whose grandfather, Simon Ray Ball, built the house in 1904. Ellen's family continues to run The Sullivan House, ensuring that the rich history and elegance of the house remain intact.
