The San Francisco Women's Building is a community center located in San Francisco, California that has been serving the Bay Area for over 40 years. It offers contemporary and affordable meeting and event space that supports cultural events, educational forums, advocacy meetings, and support groups. Thousands of people each year come to The Women's Building for events that address a full spectrum of current social and cultural issues.
The Women's Building is conveniently located between the Mission and Castro neighborhoods and is easily accessible by public transportation. The facility includes an auditorium and three well-lit, beautiful event rooms, all wheelchair accessible. With a variety of room sizes available, The Women's Building can accommodate virtually every size and type of event. Flexible seating arrangements make the perfect space for groups ranging from 10 to 350. Additionally, for events scheduled at the facility, a child care room with a 20-child capacity is available for rent.
What sets The Women's Building apart is its rich history and commitment to supporting emerging Bay Area women's projects. In 1971, a group of visionary women founded the San Francisco Women's Centers (SFWC) to incubate emerging Bay Area women's projects. The first offices, on Brady Street, soon grew too small for the volume of work that they took on, like publishing a newsletter, staffing a community switchboard, and organizing activist groups. In 1979, SFWC purchased Dovre Hall, a former Sons of Norway meeting hall and neighborhood bar, and transformed it into the first woman-owned and operated community center in the country: The Women's Building.
Since then, The Women's Building has sponsored over 170 emerging organizations, many growing into established nonprofits such as The Women's Foundation of California and LYRIC (Lavender Youth Recreation & Information Center). In 1999, The Women's Building underwent an extensive renovation and seismic retrofitting, reopening in September of 2000. Today, The Women's Building estimates that over 10,000 people pass through the doors every year to take advantage of a variety of services or attend trainings and cultural events.
Overall, The San Francisco Women's Building is a vital community space that has been supporting the Bay Area for decades. Whether you're attending a cultural event, advocating for a cause, or hosting your own event, The Women's Building is the perfect space that offers flexibility and affordability for all.
