The Gem Shop in Cedarburg, Wisconsin is a true gem of a store. With over 40 years in business, this lapidary is a favorite among locals and tourists alike. The shop specializes in the mining and cutting of unique designer cabochons, and has a vast knowledge of the world's rock, gem, and lapidary markets.
The Gem Shop began as a cottage industry in the basement of owner Eugene Mueller's home. Gene's love for rocks began as a young boy visiting his grandfather in Minnesota, and grew into lapidary skill over the years. While teaching art at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Gene saw the need for polished stones among his art metal students. He began cutting agates and jaspers to fill this need.
As demand increased, The Gem Shop was officially born. The growing inventory of rough rock threatened to sink Gene's house deep into the ground, so with the encouragement of his wife, the business moved to its own location in the Brewery Works building on the east side of Cedar Creek in Cedarburg. In 1980, the business was incorporated and moved to its present location in the Cedarburg Historic District.
The Gem Shop now boasts the largest inventory of rough rock in the Midwest, with over 100,000 pounds on hand. Visitors can browse through an abundance of stones, crystals, and gemstones, and even purchase unique jewelry designs. The shop also offers classes and workshops on lapidary, wire wrapping, and jewelry making.
