The Croswell, located in the charming town of Adrian, Michigan, is a historic theater that has been entertaining audiences for almost 150 years. As Michigan's oldest theater, The Croswell has seen its fair share of history. In fact, it's one of the oldest continuously operating theaters in the United States.
Named after Charles M. Croswell, an Adrian resident and the 17th governor of Michigan, The Croswell has hosted some of the greatest actors of the 19th century, including Edwin Booth, Maude Adams, Otis Skinner, and Mrs. Patrick Campbell. It even hosted the legendary bandmaster John Philip Sousa, as well as important political figures like Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony.
The Croswell was turned into a movie theater in the early part of the 20th century, and this role continued for about 50 years. However, the building was in danger of demolition by 1967. Fortunately, a group of community-minded citizens set about reviving the building as a home for live theater. They succeeded in their mission, and today The Croswell is a beautiful historic venue that stages high-quality musical theater, concerts, and plays.
Jere Righter, a theater and speech communications graduate of Siena Heights University, has been involved in almost every aspect of The Croswell for the past 25 years. She is grateful for the generous support, membership, sponsorship, and volunteerism that have helped to continue the theater's legacy as a downtown anchor and regional jewel.
If you're a fan of the performing arts, The Croswell is a must-see destination. It's a beautiful, historic theater with comfortable seats and excellent acoustics. People who have attended shows at The Croswell have raved about the high quality of the performances. If you're ever in the Adrian area and looking for a fun and entertaining evening, you won't be disappointed with The Croswell!
