Working on marine fisheries projects as a Peace Corps volunteer in a remote Philippine village, I never imagined a career in aquariums. I had just finished a BS degree in biology and a minor in studio art at Middlebury College, Vermont, and had already made plans to attend graduate school and pursue a career in research when I had finished my Peace Corps program. Then everything changed. A National Geographic magazine article about the Monterey Bay Aquarium arrived at my hut and I found my career in aquariums, a place where science and art are mixed together. In my 10 year tenure at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, I have had many different roles. I was a lead biologist on developing the first major deep sea exhibit in the world and have had the opportunity to develop some very unique and novel life support systems for these animals (as well as visit many incredible deep sea habitats in California, Hawaii, and Japan).
