Situated in the Foster-Powell neighborhood of Portland, Oregon, Performance Works NorthWest (PWNW) is a contemporary performance art space that fosters experimentation, creativity, and dialog between artists and audiences in the Pacific Northwest. Founded in 1999 by choreographer and performer Linda Austin and Jeff Forbes, PWNW has been a vibrant site for rehearsals, workshops, classes, and performances for over two decades.
As an artist-focused incubator for new time-based work, PWNW nurtures local talent while linking Portland audiences and artists to regional, national, and international artists whose work challenges and inspires. The space offers a range of programs, including performances, space rental for rehearsals and intimate performances, developing new work by Linda Austin Dance, residencies for local and visiting artists, and a movement class for kids aged six to ten.
Linda Austin, who returned to her native Oregon in 1998 after spending 20 years in New York City, has been the artistic and executive director of PWNW since its inception. Her work has been supported by Movement Research, Danspace Project, P.S. 122, and the Kitchen, and she has been presented by the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art's TBA Festival, NW New Works at Seattle's On the Boards, and Ten Tiny Dances.
PWNW's space has also been used to produce performances of Linda Austin Dance at venues such as Conduit, the Echo Theatre, Imago Theatre, and in warehouses and galleries. Her awards include Fellowships from the Regional Arts and Culture Council, New York Foundation for the Arts, and Oregon Arts Commission, as well as residencies at Djerassi Resident Artists Program (Bessie Schönberg Memorial Endowed Fellowship) and Robert Wilson's Watermill Center.
Overall, Performance Works NorthWest is a cultural gem of the outer east side of Portland that is a great place to catch cutting-edge, high-quality dance and theater performances.
