The vineyard is situated in a small valley, protected from the elements, with alluvial soil that is rich in limestone, flint, and shale chips. The owners, Franklin and Bonnie Houser, purchased the 103-acre property in the 1970s as a getaway home for their young family. However, in 1992, Franklin decided to plant the first vines as a retirement project. Since then, the vineyard has faced multiple setbacks, including two catastrophic floods in 1998 and 2002 and an infestation of Pierce's disease in 2000, which wiped out an entire crop of vines. Despite these challenges, the owners have persevered and developed a series of core wines that are unmatched in character and quality.
