Standing at 6 feet, 4 inches, Derek Touchette has the build of a natural athlete. But Touchette says being a great athlete is about more than good genetics. At Velocity Sports Performance in Naples, which he co-owns with his father, Touchette works with children and adults to teach the fundamentals of speed, agility and strength. "We make better athletes," he says.
Make no mistake: this is not ordinary gyms (and Touchette is no ordinary personal trainer). The 15,000-square-foot facility doesn't rely on machines to condition its athletes. Instead, coaches - who all hold degrees in exercise science - work with athletes on the facility's four lane, 50-yard track or 20- by 40-yard stretch of AstroTurf. "We like to keep it fun," Touchette says. "Keep people off the machines."
