In 1988, the bookstore temporarily moved to a location in the University Tower during the Phase III expansion of the University Center, which reopened in January 1990. The Hill underwent a rebranding effort in fall 2012 to focus on students' retail needs in addition to campus course materials.

The Hill is a not-for-profit, self-supporting organization owned by UC Irvine, operating on behalf of the campus community. It currently employs over 100 UCI students, and many of its full-time staff are UCI alumni. Any surplus is used for programs in the division of Student Affairs.
