Located in Philadelphia, Shofuso Japanese Cultural Center offers visitors a unique and captivating experience that reflects the rich history of Japanese culture. This traditional-style Japanese house and nationally-ranked garden is situated in the heart of West Fairmount Park and is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the beauty and elegance of Japanese gardens and architecture.
Built in Japan in 1953 using traditional techniques and materials, Shofuso was moved to Philadelphia in 1958 and has since become a beloved landmark of the city. The center offers visitors the chance to tour the house, view the garden, and feed the koi fish that swim gracefully in the pond. The 1.2 acre Japanese viewing garden is top-rated in the US, with a pond, island, and swimming koi fish as its centerpieces. The recent historic landscape restoration has renovated the tea garden and the courtyard garden to beautiful condition.
The viewing garden with koi pond and island, tea garden, and courtyard garden comprise the 17th century-style Japanese walled and fenced garden of this historic site and museum. The gardens are meticulously cared for and are the perfect place for visitors to relax and enjoy the stunning scenery.
While visiting, guests are invited to participate in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies or attend one of the center's cultural programs. Shofuso Japanese Cultural Center also welcomes volunteers and offers memberships to those who wish to support the center's ongoing efforts to preserve and promote Japanese culture in Philadelphia.
Kim Andrews has been the Executive Director of Shofuso Japanese House and Garden since 2010. A lifelong Philadelphian and former Mount Airy girl who was previously a preservation consultant to over fifty cultural heritage organizations, Kim is a founding board member and treasurer of the North American Japanese Garden Association (NAJGA), board member of the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia (JASGP), and on the Global Philly 2015 planning committee of the Global Philadelphia Association.
Shofuso Japanese Cultural Center is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11am to 5pm through October 31, and on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm from November 6 through December 12. Admission is by timed ticket only, and capacity is limited, so it is best to purchase tickets online up to two weeks in advance.
