Nestled on the banks of the Delaware River in the historic Bucks County town of Erwinna, Pennsylvania lies Sand Castle Winery; a purveyor of world-class wines with a long and noble heritage. Founded by Joseph and Paul Maxian, who were born and raised in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, a region renowned for wine-making before even the Romans ruled the world. In 1974, the Maxian family purchased a hillside property in Bucks County overlooking the Delaware River, and their dream of Sand Castle Winery began to take shape.

In the early 1980s, construction began on the winery building, and against all odds, after decades of continuous effort, the stunning Sand Castle was finally completed in 2007. The vines at Sand Castle Winery are exclusively Vitis Vinifera special seedlings cloned from European stock. Over 56,000 of these young plants were painstakingly hand-planted, one by one, including varieties such as Chardonnay, Johannisberg Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir.

The first vintage was produced in 1987, and roughly 2,000 cases of Chardonnay and Riesling were yielded. In 1988, the first bottle of Sand Castle wine was sold. Today, Sand Castle Winery relies entirely on its own harvest to produce its world-class wines, making it one of the few wineries exclusively growing European vines on the East Coast.
