Nestled in the bustling town of Corona, New York, the Queens Museum is a cultural gem that proudly showcases the highest quality visual arts and educational programming to the residents of this uniquely diverse, ethnic and international community.
Originally built as the New York City Pavilion for the 1939 World's Fair, the structure was later renovated to house the General Assembly of the newly formed United Nations from 1946 to 1950. In 1964, as part of the New York World's Fair, the building was once again renovated, this time to showcase the iconic Panorama of the City of New York, a vast architectural model that includes every single building constructed before 1992 in all five boroughs.
In 1972, the north side of the New York City Building was handed over to the Queens Museum of Art, marking a turning point in the museum's history. Since then, the museum has undergone its first major renovation and is in the process of doubling in size by expanding into the south side of the New York City Building. The architects for this new expansion are Grimshaw/Ammann and Whitney.
As the Executive Director of the Queens Museum of Art, Tom Finkelpearl's vision is to continue to expand the museum's reach and impact within the community. With a BA from Princeton University and an MFA from Hunter College, Finkelpearl brings a wealth of experience to the museum, having previously worked as Deputy Director at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, and as Director of New York City's Percent for Art Program.
In addition to its exciting contemporary art exhibitions, the Queens Museum of Art is also home to the Panorama of the City of New York, which remains a popular attraction for both locals and tourists alike. With its unique blend of history, culture, and education, the Queens Museum is a must-visit destination for those seeking to explore the vibrant and diverse community of Corona, Queens.
