Nearly 30 years ago, Fran Lessans spotted a desperate need to protect overseas travelers from tropical disease. As director of a university-based health service, she regularly referred clients to area hospitals for immunizations before their international trips. Clients would later return complaining about the cost and lack of information about the preventative care received. Information was scare in those days. The CDC offered only prerecorded messages via long distance phone service, and few physicians knew much about travel medicine. Local health departments offered limited, misleading and often wrong information. Seeing this healthcare gap, Fran began developing educational materials to help clients understand how diseases were transmitted and discussed problems that clients might encounter while traveling. All these years later, Passport Health has helped protect millions of travelers at clinics across North America and the United Kingdom.
