Business Description

Nichi Bei Bussan is a beloved niche department store and museum located in the heart of San Jose, California. The store has been in operation since 1948 and offers a unique selection of goods that are hard to find elsewhere. The store specializes in martial arts equipment and supplies, kimono and accessories, futon and zabuton, fabrics, books, new and vintage consignments, and giftware.

The store has a rich history, having been founded in San Francisco by Shojiro Tatsuno who outfitted incoming Japanese immigrants in "western" clothing. The original store was rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake and re-opened in 1946 following the Japanese American internment during WWII, where it was renamed NB Dept. Store. The current San Jose location opened in 1948 and the store returned to its original name, Nichi Bei Bussan, in the early 1960s. The final SF store closed in 1997.

Nichi Bei Bussan is not just a store, but also a museum that showcases the culture and history of the Japanese-American community in the Bay Area. The store's collection includes kimono, dishes, martial arts equipment, craft supplies, fabric, temari, futon, and NB-made kimono, happi coats, aloha shirts, tsuzumi and zabuton pillows, noren, and custom-made items.

What makes Nichi Bei Bussan especially unique is its commitment to sustainability. As a "vintage" business, NB supports individuals and community non-profit organizations (such as Yu-Ai Kai, Buddhist Church, Wesley United Methodist Church, etc.) by consignment-selling unique new and vintage "cherishables." Customers often find one-of-a-kind items to treasure.

The store has a loyal customer base that includes students, housewives, and retirees. Over 110 people have been on the staff over the years, with some retired staff marking their 56th year with the store in October 2019. The Tatsuno family has been at the helm for three generations, with the current owner being the third generation. The brother of the current owner managed the SF store from 1948 until its closing in 1997.

In conclusion, Nichi Bei Bussan is a must-visit store for anyone interested in Japanese culture and history. This unique department store and museum offers a wide variety of hard-to-find goods, as well as a glimpse into the culture and history of the Japanese-American community in the Bay Area.
