The store's history is a fascinating one. It started in Anaheim, Orange County, right next to the BNSF Mainline, at the mile marker 38. This was a significant location and let the engineers know they were 38 miles from the Los Angeles BNSF yard. Originally, Milepost 38 started as an all-scales store. However, in 2014, the store was sold to the owners of Arnie's Model Trains in Westminster. Since Arnie's Trains already specialized in HO & N Scale, Milepost 38 was an add-on to specialize in just the bigger trains, O, G, & Thomas.
