Nestled in the charming town of Arcata, California, lies a hidden gem for cinephiles and movie enthusiasts alike - La Dolce Video. This independent video rental store, just a short walk from HSU, takes pride in its extensive collection of films, catering to the diverse tastes of the residents of Humboldt County.
La Dolce Video stands out from the crowd with its impressive selection of movies, boasting a wide range of genres that extend beyond what's readily available on popular streaming platforms. Here, film lovers can embark on a journey through cinematic history, exploring classics, imports, and cult favorites that may not be found anywhere else, including Netflix. The store's dedication to quality and hard-to-find entertainment is evident in its curated selection of independent films, foreign masterpieces, captivating documentaries, art house wonders, BBC and Canadian TV series, sci-fi adventures, and even anime delights.
Upon stepping inside La Dolce Video, visitors are greeted by a thoughtfully organized space, designed for easy browsing and discovery. Films from various countries, genres, and eras are meticulously separated, making it effortless to find that perfect movie for a cozy night in or a captivating weekend marathon. Whether you're in search of thought-provoking dramas, heartwarming comedies, or adrenaline-fueled action, La Dolce Video has something to satisfy every cinematic craving.
La Dolce Video has a rich history that adds to its charm and allure. In August of 2009, the store opened its doors after acquiring the inventory of Video Experience (VX), the oldest video store in Arcata. This acquisition allowed La Dolce Video to preserve and offer VX's remarkable collection of films, ensuring that the cinematic treasures of the past remain accessible to the public.
Behind the scenes, the passionate and knowledgeable owners, Merrick McKinlay and Aimee Hennessy, bring a wealth of expertise and love for films to La Dolce Video. Both HSU alumni, Aimee Hennessy holds a B.A. in Film Production and has co-directed the nonprofit Humboldt Film Festival while attending HSU. Merrick McKinlay, in addition to running the store, is involved in creating music with the critically acclaimed experimental band Starving Weirdos.
La Dolce Video has become a beloved institution in Arcata, offering a more personal and immersive movie-watching experience than simply streaming from the comfort of home. It's a place where film aficionados can explore the vast world of cinema and discover hidden treasures that might have otherwise been overlooked. So, if you're in search of a cinematic adventure beyond the mainstream, look no further than La Dolce Video in Arcata - where the magic of film awaits.
