Business Description

Historic Hanna's Town is a true gem located in Greensburg, PA 15601. This historic site is managed by the Westmoreland Historical Society, which has been a steward of the site since 1969. It is a wonderful place to visit for anyone interested in learning about the history of western Pennsylvania.

The site encompasses 180 acres and features a historic village consisting of the reconstructed Hanna's Tavern, five relocated log houses, a reconstructed Revolutionary War-era fort, a Conestoga wagon, an 18th-century kitchen garden, an 18th-century dye garden, and pollinator gardens of native plants. The grounds are open year-round, and two interpretive signs are available to read by Hanna's Tavern and the fort.

One of the highlights of the site is the Westmoreland History Education Center, which opened in 2019. It is the only county-wide history education center in the area and houses an exhibit gallery, classroom, museum shop, and library of genealogical and regional history materials. The Education Center is open year-round and offers a wide range of programs and events for all ages.

Historic Hanna's Town served as the first English courts west of the Allegheny Mountains and the first seat of government for Westmoreland County from 1773-1786. It was home to frontier settlers, hosted travelers along the Forbes Road, and served as a recruitment center during the Revolutionary War. The Hanna's Town Resolves, adopted on May 16, 1775, proclaimed citizens' willingness to protect their rights by taking up arms against Great Britain. On July 13, 1782, Hanna's Town was attacked and burned by Seneca and their British allies in one of the final conflicts of the Revolutionary War. Though the town never recovered, the site's subsequent conversion to farmland in the early 1800s preserved it as an archaeological time capsule of frontier life in western Pennsylvania.

Overall, Historic Hanna's Town is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in history. Whether you're a history buff or just looking for a fun and educational outing, this site is sure to impress. With its beautiful grounds, fascinating exhibits, and engaging programs, it's easy to see why this site is such a beloved destination for visitors of all ages.
