Business Description

Halau i Ka Pono - The Hula School of Chicago is a performing arts school that focuses on the art of Hawaiian dance. Located in Oak Park, IL 60302, this studio offers both classical and modern Hawaiian dance classes for adults. The school was founded by Kumu Hula June Kaililani Tanoue, who has over 25 years of experience in the art of hula.

June’s extensive experience in hula began in Halau Hula Ka No'eau, under the tutelage of Kumu Hula Michael Pili Pang, on the Big Island of Hawaii. She graduated from the halau as an Olapa (Dancer) in 1994, an Olapa/Ho'opa'a (Keeper of the Chants) in 1996, and as a Kumu Hula (Master Teacher of the Hula) in June 2000. June began teaching hula classes in 2003, both in New York City and Chicago, before opening Halau i Ka Pono - The Hula School of Chicago in 2009.

The hula school is a non-denominational project of the Zen Life & Meditation Center - Chicago, which was co-founded by June. She has an MPH in Nutrition, is a Reiki Master, and fully empowered Zen Priest and Teacher in the White Plum Lineage. Her passion for hula is evident in her teachings, and she shares her love of the art with her students.
