In the heart of Detroit's Greektown district, the Golden Fleece Restaurant has been a beloved institution since the early 70s. The Dionisopoulos family took over the establishment on April 8th, 1971, and have been serving up the best homemade gyros in the area ever since.
The history of the Golden Fleece is intertwined with that of the Dionisopoulos family. Brothers Nick and Bill came to the United States in the mid-60s and began selling produce to the Greek community outside of churches. They eventually opened their own Greek grocery store called the Apollo Market for a few years before taking over the Golden Fleece Restaurant. Today, it is one of the longest-running Greek establishments in the Greektown district, earning it the title of Greektown's Grandfather.
The restaurant's interior is casual yet classy, with ample seating for diners to enjoy a satisfying meal. The ambience is perfect for those looking to catch up with friends or family over an unforgettable meal.
While the Golden Fleece is known for its Gyros, their menu goes far beyond that. Their menu includes Mediterranean and seafood dishes that are sure to tantalize the taste buds of anyone who tries them. Their commitment to quality is evident with each bite, and they strive to provide the best possible experience for every customer who walks through their doors.
The restaurant's Vice President of the Greektown Preservation Society, and Chairman of the Detroit Greek Independence Parade Committee, is a Wayne State business school graduate and was born in Detroit but raised in Kalamata, Greece. He started eXodos lounge in 2003 with his brother and cousins right above the Golden Fleece Restaurant, which their family has owned for over 42 years.
Visitors to the Golden Fleece are sure to enjoy the warm, welcoming atmosphere and the delicious, authentic Greek cuisine. It's the perfect spot for a memorable meal, whether you're a regular or a first-time visitor.
