The Garner Performing Arts Center is a hidden gem located in the charming town of Garner, North Carolina. This quaint 471-seat theater is housed inside the Historic Garner High School building and is a must-visit destination for anyone who appreciates cultural events and live performances.
This historic venue has a fascinating history that dates back to 1923 when Garner High School was built in the heart of Garner, a small town just outside the capital of Raleigh. The school graduated its last class in 1956 and was later converted to Garner Elementary School, which was in operation until 1992. In 1998, plans to demolish the main building were voiced by the Wake County School Board, but the Garner District Education and Recreation Foundation initiated a drive to save the school. In 1998, after extensive interior renovation, the building was reopened for senior citizens. The original auditorium and its wooden seats were purchased and operated by the Town of Garner as Garner Historic Auditorium. In 2006, an extensive renovation of the auditorium took place, resulting in the current Garner Performing Arts Center, complete with an expansive stage and backstage area, improved theatrical lighting and sound.
Today, the Garner Performing Arts Center hosts a variety of cultural events throughout the year, including music, dance, theater, and comedy performances. The venue is also available for private events, making it the perfect choice for weddings, receptions, and other special occasions.
