Lucky Baldwin later acquired the property and developed the lakefront portion, building a summer home and selling parcels to other families. The property passed through several hands before being purchased by Captain Alonzo Richardson and his wife Cora in 1924. The couple built cabins, a hotel, dining room, gas station, long wharf, and other buildings, creating the resort we know today.

Despite facing tragedy in 1953 when Al's widow, Cora, his daughter Florence and son-in-law Ray Knisley carried on the resort operations. In 1967, the family faced great pressures to sell the property for condominium development, but Ray was determined to preserve the area's natural beauty. The family asked the USFS to convert the resort back to government land, creating one of the largest and most valuable areas of recreation ever converted to public use. Today, the resort is privately owned but operates under a special use permit from the USFS.
