The giant Redwood tree on the grounds hearkened to locals to find booths offering horse shoeing and cart businesses. In 1890, it became part of the Klyce homestead and in 1954, Sam'l Newsom purchased the barn for an art studio and created the garden, at the same time that he was designing and landscaping the world-famous Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park, in San Francisco. Sam'l opened a retail Bonsai store in downtown Mill Valley. Spring, 2013 issue, featured in Mill Valley Historical Society Review Magazine, titled "Artists In The Canyon." In 2014, July, Cine-Source Magazine Movie/Video Location Of The Month. A Japanese TV series in 2015, 2017. In 2015, chosen to be part of the Mill Valley Outdoor Art Club Tour, when over 800 people viewed the garden in one day. A number of tours for non-profit fundraising. Since then add advertising film and TV segments. The garden maintains Zen standards.
