In the vibrant town of West Orange, New Jersey, lies a cultural gem that captures the essence of Afro Brazilian arts and traditions - Afro Brazilian Cultural Center of New Jersey. This extraordinary center offers a diverse range of classes, including Capoeira, Samba, Karate, Zumba, Belly Dance, Hip Hop, Salsa, and Yoga. Nestled on 69 Washington Street, the Afro Brazilian Cultural Center of New Jersey has become a hub for individuals seeking to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Afro Brazilian culture.
Led by the esteemed Mestre Gaivota, also known as David Morgan, the center boasts over three decades of experience in martial arts and a deep passion for Afro Brazilian arts. Mestre Gaivota's journey began with Tai Kwon Do in his childhood, progressing to Shotokan as a teenager, and later embracing the full-contact style of Enshin. His dedication and skill in Enshin led him to compete in bare-knuckle, knockdown tournaments, where he consistently achieved remarkable results.
It was during his travels in Bahia in 1999 that Mestre Gaivota discovered Capoeira, which ultimately became his true calling. In 2003, he began teaching Capoeira classes at the NJ Capoeira Arts Center. Inspired by his passion to share Afro Brazilian arts, Mestre Gaivota established the Afro Brazilian Cultural Center of New Jersey in 2006, now a thriving institution in West Orange.
With a curriculum carefully crafted by Mestre Gaivota himself, the center offers an array of educational programs that cater to all skill levels and age groups. From children to adults, the Afro Brazilian Cultural Center of New Jersey welcomes individuals from diverse backgrounds, fostering an inclusive and lively community.
Beyond its exceptional classes, the center actively engages with the local community, showcasing performances in various events and providing enriching presentations in schools and other venues. It is through these efforts that the Afro Brazilian Cultural Center of New Jersey continues to spread awareness and appreciation for Afro Brazilian culture.
Visitors of the center have praised the warm and welcoming atmosphere, highlighting the transformative experiences they've had. Joanna D., a satisfied participant, expressed, "This place is the home of such a lively community. ABCCNJ has taught me so many things, and not just Capoeira. It has given me so much history about the Afro Brazilian culture."
Another testimonial comes from Ori W., who shared, "My kids (8,6,4) have been training with Mestre Gaivota for the past year. It's been an absolute pleasure. Every class starts with 10-15 minutes of music..."
The Afro Brazilian Cultural Center of New Jersey has truly become a haven for those seeking cultural enrichment, physical fitness, and community engagement. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned practitioner, a visit to this remarkable center will undoubtedly leave you with a deeper understanding and appreciation for Afro Brazilian arts and culture.
