The museum's four permanent galleries showcase a fascinating collection of over 23,000 artifacts, historic objects, and interactive displays. Visitors can step back in time and experience the history of the area through the railroad displays, life-sized model village, and transplanted historic depot and Pullman narrow-gauge train car.
In addition to the permanent galleries, the museum's special exhibition gallery presents 3-5 exhibits per year, many of which are organized by the museum and feature artworks and objects of local and national importance. The museum also hosts traveling exhibitions by esteemed organizations such as the Smithsonian Institute Traveling Exhibitions (SITES) and the Washington State Historical Society Traveling Exhibition Service.
The museum's rich history is as fascinating as the exhibits themselves. The museum began with brainstorming sessions over breakfast at Red's Café in Ilwaco. The old Telephone Utility building had just been deeded to the city, and Mayor Les Peterson turned to City Council member Noreen Robinson and told her to "Do something with it, Noreen." In the beginning, Noreen literally ran the museum out of her purse, buying tables, chairs, adjoining property, and even a hot dog cart, which she called her "wiener wagon." Today, the museum is a thriving institution with over 7,300 square feet of exhibition space and a schedule of 4-5 exhibitions and numerous special events annually.
